Setting Up Your File
When importing a CSV file of contacts, the format used will need to match the headers and format exactly as described below, or the import results will be inconsistent.
Prior to importing, you'll need to review and potentially edit your csv in a spreadsheet program like Google Sheets or Excel. This will allow you to modify the header names so they match the exact name of the field's listed below and confirm the data is broken up as specified. Variations of header titles are also allowed and are indicated by alternate spelling.
You may also wish to test the import with one or two contacts prior to importing a large batch of contacts.
To make importing contacts easier, you may use this google doc. This will ensure the headers are correct and you can paste your information into the rows as needed.
As many users have access to this, the file is a "view only" file. Please save a copy for yourself and then add your data as needed. Not sure how to save a copy? Check out Google's help article by clicking here.
Once your copy is updated to match the headers described, select download your file as a CSV. This can now be imported into 17hats.
Please note the phone numbers must be entered in the 888-888-888 format.
Acceptable data fields & Alternate Header Titles:
'first name', firstname, first, 'given name', given
'last name', lastname, last, 'family name'
company, 'company name', 'business name', business
email, e-mail, 'e-mail address'
"business phone 2"
"company main phone"
"home phone 2"
addresses (all field names can be prefixed with "business", "home ", "other")
'street 2', 'address 2'
zip, 'postal code'
'web page', website, url
tags (# comma or semi-colon separated)
**Note: To add more than 1 tag to a contact, simply separate these with a comma under the "tags" header.
Importing Into 17hats
Once your CSV file is updated to match the headers above, you can upload them into 17hats.
First, login to 17hats and go to your "Contacts" tab. Next, click the gear icon on the top right of the page and select the option to import as shown by the blue arrow.
You'll then be taken to the Contact Import page where you can select your file. Be sure to select the "CSV File" option as shown with the blue box.
Once a file has been selected, you'll be prompted to select the contacts to be imported, apply any tags, or update the contact type. You can update them in bulk using the check boxes, or update each manually as needed.
IMPORTANT: When selecting which Contacts to import, the records will be sorted alphabetically by the First Name and Last Name fields in your CSV.
IMPORTANT: You must select Contacts to import using the checkboxes provided. If none are checked, the information will not be uploaded.
When the file has been uploaded, you'll get a prompt at the top of the screen that your file was imported successfully.
